Everything in Palawan, measured in hours
Puerto Princesa is not really a destination — it is a distance. Every argument about this city is an argument about time in a van, so here is the whole province on one axis. Change your base and every number recalculates. Anything over six hours round trip is not a day trip, no matter who is selling it as one.
The whole tourist zone is a 4 km strip. Cathedral, Plaza Cuartel, the seafront grill stalls.
3 km from downtown — checked in 10 minutes after baggage claim. Tricycle ₱100–150 for the whole thing. No international flights despite the name.
Three sandbar islands, ₱1,500–2,000 for the joiner. Multicab ₱25–50 or a ₱300–500 tricycle charter if you go alone.
₱1,200–1,700 with dinner including the transfer, and the best-reviewed evening here. Go near a new moon.
The locals' cove. No fee, no signal, no reef, real rip currents. Motorbike ₱500–600 a day, or ₱600 each way by tricycle.
Community-run caving and a zipline descent, ₱500–650 combined. The best 90-minute add-on to the river day.
Multi-tier swimming falls, about ₱50. Only worth it bundled into a south-Palawan day.
The UNESCO river and the 45-minute paddle. Shared van ₱150–450, bus ₱125–150, or ₱2,000–2,500 with the tour that also holds your permit.
₱600 by SBE van, six departures a day. Better snorkelling than Honda Bay and quieter than El Nido — the one that almost works as a day.
14 km of near-empty white sand. Bus ₱400, van ₱350–500 — and a timetable that makes a same-day return absurd.

5–6 hours to Buliluyan Port leaving at 04:00, then 2–4 hours by boat. Packages ₱8,000–15,000. Book four days or do not go.
Times are typical door-to-door driving hours in normal conditions, not best cases. Fares are deliberately not computed from distance — Port Barton is 3½ hours for ₱600 and El Nido is 5½ hours for ₱650, so any formula would be confidently wrong; real fares are in each note. Everything north sits on one highway, so from Sabang you backtrack to the Salvacion junction before heading further north — the ruler measures road time, not straight lines.

Is the Underground River worth nine hours of your day?
The ratio is the whole argument, and it is worse than anyone tells you: 7–10 hours door to door for 45 minutes on the water. It is still worth doing once — 4.4/5 from 5,813 reviews, a 60–65 m chamber your torch cannot reach the top of, and the one thing here El Nido cannot duplicate. Skip it only if you have under five days in Palawan.
Honda Bay or the Underground River, if you only get one?
Almost everyone should take the river, because it is unrepeatable and Honda Bay is not. The exception is real though: with young children, or with El Nido and Coron already booked, Honda Bay's shallow sandbars are the better day and the snorkelling you are skipping was never the good stuff. Honda Bay sits at 4.0 across 2,040 reviews for exactly that reason.
Van, bus, private car or fly to El Nido?
The ₱650 shared van is the default and it is also the least-loved product in Palawan — 3.3 stars across 607 reviews, fast drivers, crammed seats. The air-conditioned Cherry Bus is an hour slower, ₱840–998, takes real luggage and is the right answer with children. A private van at ₱7,200–9,000 splits to about ₱1,200 a head for a family of six.

This city has 411 bookable properties against El Nido's 576, and it is materially cheaper at every tier — dorms from ₱450, pensions ₱800–1,700, the best rooms in town ₱4,500–9,000. Where you sleep matters more than which hotel you pick: the city centre gets first tour pickups and the good dinners, the airport fringe has the pools and the free shuttles, and one night in Sabang buys you the first boat into the cave.

El Nido is better than Puerto Princesa at the thing you came to Palawan for. The limestone lagoons and the gin-clear water are five and a half hours north, and no amount of writing changes that. What Puerto Princesa has is the Underground River, the cheapest and most frequent flights on the island, a food scene locals actually eat in, and no crowd. Concede the first point and the rest of this site is worth trusting.
