Puerto Princesa Airport (PPS): the practical guide
The single most underrated logistics fact about this city is that the airport is inside it. PPS sits on Rizal Avenue about 3 km and 8–10 minutes from downtown; several accommodations are a 20–30 minute walk from arrivals. You can land at 10:00 and be checked in by 10:30, which is why a same-day city tour or even Honda Bay is realistic on a morning arrival. The terminal is a modern glass building opened in 2017 with about 2 million passengers of capacity, and despite the name there are no scheduled international flights as of August 2026 — you will clear immigration in Manila or Cebu.
You can walk out of arrivals into the city
No other major Philippine island gateway is this convenient, and almost nobody plans around it. It changes what a short trip can contain.
The runway runs alongside Rizal Avenue, the city's main street, and downtown starts about 3 km west of the terminal door. A tricycle covers it in 8–10 minutes for ₱100–150 chartered. Several hotels in the city centre and most of the airport-area properties are a 20–30 minute walk — genuinely walkable with a carry-on in the cooler hours, and a bad idea at 13:00 in April.
The practical consequence: a 10:00 arrival can be checked in by 10:30, out on a half-day city tour by 12:00, and at the Iwahig fireflies by 18:00. That is a full day of the trip that most itineraries write off as a travel day. Compare it with El Nido, where the airport is 4 km from town but the town is five and a half hours from here.
Going the other way, a 15:00 departure means leaving your hotel at about 13:30 rather than 11:00, which is another half-day recovered. The layover page works through what fits into the gap.
PPS in four figures
A small, modern, single-terminal airport that punches above its size because of where it sits.
"International" is currently decoration
Puerto Princesa International Airport has no scheduled international flights. Every international passenger connects through Manila or Cebu, and that is where you will clear immigration.
Past service to Taipei and Seoul-Incheon ran before the pandemic and has not returned as scheduled service. A Jeju Air Incheon route was announced in July 2025 and has not launched. Whether any charters are planned for winter 2026–27 is unverified — the honest answer is to check the airport's own announcements close to your dates rather than trust a route map.
Two practical consequences. First, budget a connection: Manila to Puerto Princesa is 1 h 15–25 on top of your long-haul, and Manila's terminal transfers are the part that eats time — allow three hours between an international arrival at NAIA and a domestic departure. Second, your visa and eTravel formalities happen at the international gateway, not here.
The domestic picture is healthier than the name suggests: about 179 flights a month from Manila alone, five to six daily combined across Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. The full route table has frequencies and fares.
Your exit from arrivals, ranked
The whole arrival sequence takes about twenty minutes if the SIM kiosk is open and about ten if you skip it. Baggage on a domestic turboprop or A320 here is quick.
| Step | What to do | Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. SIM kiosk Globe and Smart counters in arrivals | Buy here if it is open — hours vary and evening arrivals often find them closed. Registration is mandatory and takes 10–20 minutes with your passport | ₱300–500 ~20–25 GB | WORTH IT |
| 2. ATM machines landside and airside | Only if the queue is short. Airport machines empty at weekends and around the 15th and 30th — the better plan is to draw downtown | About ₱250 fee | DEPENDS |
| 3. Ground transport tricycle rank, hotel shuttles, pre-booked vans | Tricycle chartered into town, or your hotel's free shuttle if it runs one. Ignore the taxis asking ₱250–400 | ₱100–150 | WORTH IT |
| 4. Downtown Rizal Avenue, 3 km west | Ten minutes later you are checking in. If you land before 11:00 you still have a usable day | — | WORTH IT |
| Straight to El Nido or Port Barton skip the city entirely | Pre-book Fortwally or Eulen Joy — their vans meet arrivals and include the pickup. Do not turn up at the San Jose terminal hoping | ₱700–800 | DEPENDS |
Tour recruiters work arrivals and their markups are one of the few genuine annoyances here. Book through your hotel or a platform instead — the safety page covers the short list of local scams.
The practical bit
How early to arrive, and what is airside
Two hours for a domestic departure is comfortable and ninety minutes is realistic. This is not an airport where you want to arrive four hours early — there is very little to do once you are through.
Airside has a small selection of cafés and souvenir counters and that is genuinely it. If you want a last decent meal, eat downtown — Itoy's opens at 06:00 for the early flights and is ten minutes away. If you want souvenirs with a story rather than a keyring, Binuatan Creations weaves them on site and is on most city-tour routes.
Bring your remaining pesos down before you fly: the ATM situation is better downtown, and there is nothing to spend leftover cash on airside beyond coffee. Note that dried and fresh seafood, and any wildlife product, has rules attached — never buy the latter at all, and check the airline's line on the former. The rules page covers it.
One quirk worth knowing: because the airport is on Rizal Avenue, traffic to it is the city's ordinary traffic. There is no expressway run and no realistic scenario where a 3 km tricycle ride makes you miss a flight, short of a festival parade closing the avenue. Check the festivals calendar if you fly out during Balayong or Baragatan.
Airport transfers, and when they are worth it
For most arrivals the honest answer is a tricycle at ₱100–150. Pre-book when you are landing late, travelling with children, carrying more than a tricycle holds, or heading straight north.
Airport questions, answered
How far is Puerto Princesa airport from the city centre?
About 3 km, or 8–10 minutes by tricycle for ₱100–150 chartered. It sits on Rizal Avenue, the city's main street, and several hotels are a 20–30 minute walk from arrivals. It is the most convenient island gateway in the Philippines.
Are there international flights to Puerto Princesa?
No scheduled international flights as of August 2026, despite the airport's name. Past service to Taipei and Seoul-Incheon has not returned, and a Jeju Air Incheon route announced in July 2025 never launched. You will connect and clear immigration in Manila or Cebu.
How do I get from Puerto Princesa airport to my hotel?
A chartered tricycle at ₱100–150 for the whole vehicle, or a free hotel shuttle — most midrange properties run one. There is no Grab. Airport taxis ask ₱250–400 for the same 10-minute ride, so negotiate or walk 100 m out to the road.
Is there a SIM card kiosk at the airport?
Globe and Smart kiosks operate in arrivals, but hours vary and evening arrivals frequently find them closed. Registration is mandatory under RA 11934 and takes 10–20 minutes with your passport. A tourist SIM with 20–25 GB runs about ₱300–500.
Should I use the airport ATM?
Only if the queue is short. The machines empty at weekends and around the 15th and 30th of the month, and foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal wherever you use them. Draw ₱10,000–15,000 downtown on your first afternoon instead.
How early should I get to the airport for a domestic flight?
Two hours is comfortable, ninety minutes is realistic, and there is very little airside to justify more. Because the airport is 3 km down Rizal Avenue, the journey to it is never the problem.
Can I go straight from the airport to El Nido?
Yes. Pre-book Fortwally or Eulen Joy, whose vans meet arrivals and include the pickup at about ₱700–800 for the 5 to 5 h 30 run. Turning up at the San Jose terminal instead means a ₱200 tricycle and whatever seat is left.
Which airlines fly to Puerto Princesa?
Only Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, across five domestic routes. AirAsia's Manila route was cut in June 2026, which leaves two carriers and real fare risk on peak dates — book Manila 4 to 8 weeks out.
