Port Barton from Puerto Princesa: day trip or overnight?

₱600 van · 3 h 30Day trip from $34 · ~15 hVerdict: sleep there

Quick answer
DEPENDS The day trip genuinely works and it is the wrong way to do it. One night turns the worst day on the list into the best two days of the week.

Go, and sleep there. Port Barton is ₱600 and about 3 hours 30 by SBE van, six departures a day, and it is the only far trip from this city that functions as a day at all. The packaged version runs from $34 at 4.5–4.6★ across 79–264 reviews and takes about 15 hours door to door — a 05:00 pickup and a 21:00 return. Reviewers say it was worth it and then say six hours of travel in one day is a lot. For snorkellers it beats Honda Bay outright: real wild green turtles at Turtle Spot and the best easy coral in the region at Twin Reef. Island hopping booked in the village itself is ₱1,200–1,500.

Is Port Barton for you?

SnorkellersThe best accessible coral between Honda Bay and El Nido, plus wild green turtles over seagrass. This is the reason to come.
Anyone who found El Nido too busyThe fastest-rising recommendation in 2025–2026 forum threads, and it is rising precisely because it is not El Nido.
Families breaking the drive north3h30 up, a night by the water, 2 hours onward. It turns the hardest transfer in Palawan into two easy ones.
Day-trippers with one spare dayIt works. It is 15 hours door to door from a 05:00 pickup, and you will see the village from a boat and never set foot in it.
Travellers who need things to doA 2026 blogger who loved it still wrote that there is not a ton to do, and less when it rains. Two nights is the ceiling for most people.
Anyone on a tight 10–14 day Philippines tripThe same blogger would skip it on a schedule that tight. El Nido and Coron are the ones that have to fit first.
What it actually is

The anti-El Nido, with the caveats attached

Port Barton is a sand street, a bay, a handful of guesthouses and a boat association. That is the appeal and it is also the limitation, and the people who like it most say both things in the same breath.

It sits in San Vicente municipality, off the North Palawan Highway on a spur that was the historically rough part of the journey. The last 22 km or so is now paved — still narrow and twisty, but no longer the reason people arrived rattled. Vans terminate at the Port Barton terminal in Brgy. San Pedro and the village is small enough to walk end to end.

The reason to come is the water. Turtle Spot has genuine wild green turtles grazing seagrass, not a pen and not a feeding station. Twin Reef is the best easy coral in this part of Palawan — blogs describe some of Palawan's healthiest accessible reefs and, unusually, the review corpus agrees. There is an Exotic or Maxima Island stop, and Port Barton has its own Starfish Island, unrelated to the one in Honda Bay.

The honest caveats come from a blogger who updated her verdict in January 2026 and still landed on yes, one hundred per cent: it is way more laid-back and less touristy than El Nido, and also there is not a ton to do, not much when it rains, and some places are weirdly expensive for what they are. Electricity and connectivity are patchy by city standards; several operators advertise Starlink, which tells you what the alternative is.

Be honest with yourself about the snorkelling: Honda Bay rates 4.0 on TripAdvisor against the Underground River's 4.4, and the recurring complaint is poor visibility and thin coral. If El Nido, Coron or Port Barton are on your itinerary, Honda Bay will be the worst snorkelling of your trip. If they are not, it is a pleasant, shallow, kid-proof day out.

The same village, three commitments. The middle row is the one this page is arguing for and the one almost nobody books.

The maths

The packaged day against doing it yourself with a night

The comparison people never run, because the day trip looks cheaper until you notice what it leaves out.

Do it yourself

Joiner island-hopping boat, booked in the village₱1,350
A guesthouse night₱1,200

Two days, one of them a full unhurried boat day that leaves around 09:00 rather than after a four-hour drive. You wake up in the village, you see the sunset, and you can carry on to El Nido in the morning instead of driving back the way you came.

Book the tour
from $34
per person, plus the day

About ₱1,970 for transfers both ways, the boat, the fees and a BBQ lunch, coordinated so you do nothing but be awake at 05:00. 4.5–4.6★ from 79–264 reviews, and roughly 15 hours door to door for perhaps 4 hours in the water.

Check availability

Verdict. The day trip is cheaper per hour of holiday only if you value the van hours at zero. Add a night and you spend roughly ₱2,400 more for a second day, a sunset and no 05:00 alarm — and if you are heading north anyway, the extra van fare disappears entirely.

Note the product gap before you book anything: transfers to Port Barton sell on the big platforms, but there are no Puerto-Princesa-sold Port Barton island-hopping packages apart from the full day trip. The ₱1,200–1,500 joiner boats are arranged in the village.

By month

When Port Barton is worth the road

The village runs year-round; the boats are what the weather decides. Snorkelling visibility follows the same curve as everywhere else on the west coast.

Jan
Excellent
113mm over 13 days, calm seas and the best visibility of the year. Rooms are tightest now.
Feb
Excellent
86mm over 10 days — the driest month in the region and the safest bet for a boat day.
Mar
Excellent
107mm, warm water, reliable crossings. Balayong Festival week in the city fills the vans.
Apr
Very good
94mm and the hottest, busiest stretch. Holy Week sells out rooms and vans weeks ahead.
May
Mixed
203mm over 20 days as the monsoon arrives. Mornings still work; afternoons get wet.
Jun
Mixed
237mm. Boats run more often than people expect, but a cancelled day here costs you the whole trip.
Jul
Poor
235mm over 20 days, and the blogger's point about nothing to do when it rains bites hardest now.
Aug
Poor
219mm. Stay in the city instead — the Underground River runs and Honda Bay is more sheltered.
Sep
Poor
246mm over 20 days. The quietest the village gets, for reasons you will feel.
Oct
Poor
266mm — the wettest month of the year across Palawan. Not the month to gamble a 3h30 van ride.
Nov
Improving
222mm but the seas begin settling and the dry season is starting to bite by month end.
Dec
Very good
199mm over 17 days and improving fast. Christmas to New Year is a domestic crush — book the room first.

Rainfall figures are the Puerto Princesa station and the west-coast pattern runs a little wetter. What cancels a Port Barton boat day is swell rather than rain, exactly as at Sabang.

Questions people actually search

Port Barton questions, answered

Is Port Barton worth it as a day trip from Puerto Princesa?

Barely. The packaged day is about 15 hours door to door from a 05:00 pickup for roughly 4 hours in the water, and it rates 4.5–4.6★ across 79–264 reviews because the water is genuinely good. The reviewers themselves say to spend a night. They are right.

How do I get from Puerto Princesa to Port Barton?

SBE Transport vans, ₱600, about 3 hours 30, leaving the SBE garage on BM Road at 06:00, 08:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00. Palajuanders and Recaro also run it and 12go lists the route from ₱500. Vans arrive at the terminal in Brgy. San Pedro.

Is Port Barton better than Honda Bay for snorkelling?

Outright. Turtle Spot has wild green turtles over seagrass and Twin Reef is the best easy coral in this part of Palawan, while Honda Bay rates 4.0 across 2,040 reviews with poor visibility and thin coral as the recurring complaint.

How much is island hopping in Port Barton?

₱1,200–1,500 per person for a joiner boat booked in the village, covering Turtle Spot, Twin Reef, an island stop and lunch. There are no Puerto-Princesa-sold Port Barton island-hopping packages on the big platforms apart from the full day trip.

How many nights should I spend in Port Barton?

One or two. One buys a full unhurried boat day and a sunset; two adds a second boat or a land tour. A 2026 blogger who recommends the place still says there is not a ton to do, so three nights is for people who want to do nothing.

Is Port Barton better than El Nido?

Quieter, cheaper and much less crowded — it is the fastest-rising recommendation in 2025–2026 forum threads, largely because El Nido took 500,408 arrivals in 2023. El Nido's lagoons are still better. Port Barton is the better week; El Nido is the better photograph.

Can I stop at Port Barton on the way to El Nido?

Yes, and it is the smartest use of the place. 3 hours 30 up from the city, a night, then about 2 hours onward to El Nido. It breaks the 5h30 transfer into two comfortable legs — the standard advice for families and anyone who gets car sick.

Is the road to Port Barton still rough?

No. The last 22 km off the highway used to be the bad part and is now paved, though still narrow and twisty. The 3 hour 30 journey time already assumes that section.

Money

Cash, and the fees nobody mentions

Draw cash in the city, and draw more than feels reasonable. Tours, tricycles, markets and most restaurants are cash. Foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal at nearly every bank and per-transaction limits run ₱10,000–20,000. Airport machines empty at weekends and around the 15th and 30th. Sabang is effectively an ATM desert — arrive with the whole stay in your pocket. Always decline the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency.

Every quoted price here is missing a fee, and the fee is cash. The ₱150 city environmental fee is collected separately even on tours that say all-inclusive — it is valid about a year and covers both the Underground River and Honda Bay, so keep the receipt and do not pay twice. Cheap local island tours quietly add ₱50–150 per island, ₱150 mask hire and ₱150 aqua shoes. The big platform listings mostly bake these in, which is why a ₱1,300 tour and a ₱1,880 tour often cost the same by lunchtime.

Port Barton in particular is a place to arrive funded. It is a village with limited banking, the boat association is paid in cash on the sand, and the guesthouses at the cheaper end do not take cards. Draw what you need in the city before the 06:00 van, and remember that Puerto Princesa's single-use plastics ban means nobody will hand you a bag for any of it.
