Every beach near Puerto Princesa, ranked
Start with the structural truth: there is no quality beach within about two hours of the port. A TripAdvisor destination expert with 25,000 posts said exactly that in June 2026, and the city's own beachfront resorts sit on tidal flats that go out for a hundred metres at low water. The nearest sand worth the trip is Nagtabon, 30 km and 45 to 60 minutes west, free, with 4.4/5 from 219 reviews. After that you are talking about Sabang at 1.5 to 2 hours, or going properly north to Port Barton. If a beach holiday is the point of your trip, this city is the wrong base and you should read that sentence before booking anything.
The city has no beach, and saying so is the point
This is the most repeated structural complaint about Puerto Princesa in the forums, it has been repeated for a decade, and it is true.
Puerto Princesa faces east into a shallow, silty bay. The waterfront in town is the Baywalk, which is reclaimed concrete with a sea view and excellent food stalls, and it is not a beach. Several hotels within the city limits market themselves as beachfront; what they front is a tidal flat that recedes a long way at low water and does not swim well at any tide. Book those for the pool, not the sea.
The good sand is on the west coast, over the island's spine, which is why everything on this page involves a drive. That is the trade: 45 to 60 minutes to Nagtabon, 1.5 to 2 hours to Sabang, 3.5 hours to Port Barton. Nothing shortens it.
El Nido is better than Puerto Princesa at the thing you came to Palawan for. The limestone lagoons and the gin-clear water are five and a half hours north, and no amount of writing changes that. What Puerto Princesa has is the Underground River, the cheapest and most frequent flights on the island, a food scene locals actually eat in, and no crowd. Concede the first point and the rest of this site is worth trusting.

The seven, best to worst
Nagtabon Beach
About 1 km of fine cream-to-golden sand in a cove 30 km west, now paved all the way down. No entrance fee, cottages ₱200–300, meals ₱150–200, and mostly locals. No signal, no ATM, no reef, and rip currents that drown people most years. Rent a motorbike at ₱500–600 a day and it is the best free day in the municipality.
Sabang Beach
The long tawny beach at the Underground River jump-off, 76–90 km north-west. Wide, scenic and surprisingly empty after 16:00 once the day-trippers have gone. Real surf in the habagat months. Pointless as a standalone beach day, excellent as an overnight that also solves the first-boat problem at the cave.
Talaudyong Beach
Nagtabon's longer, emptier twin, 15 minutes further on an unpaved final track — the same orange-cream sand with a handful of locals on a weekday and effectively no facilities at all. Worth it only as an add-on if you already have wheels; redundant otherwise, and the track is why.
Port Barton
Not a beach near Puerto Princesa so much as the reason to leave it. 3.5 hours north by SBE van at ₱600, with genuinely healthy accessible coral at Twin Reef and wild green turtles over the seagrass. For snorkellers, Port Barton beats Honda Bay outright. Doable as a 15-hour day trip and much better as an overnight.
Napsan and White Beach
The city tourism office's own pick on the south-west coast: white sand, big bedrock formations and a genuine west-facing sunset, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours out over a partly rough mountain road. Minimal facilities and a few homestay-style resorts. The best sunset beach in the municipality for motorbikers, and much too far for a casual half day.
Long Beach, San Vicente
14 km of white sand, the longest in the Philippines, and nearly empty. It is also 3 to 4 hours each way on a bus timetable — out 08:30, 12:00 and 14:00, back 03:00, 06:00 and 14:30 — that makes a same-day return absurd. Skip as a day trip, worth it as an overnight or as a stop on the way to El Nido.
Marufinas Beach
A remote west-coast beach on the Sabang side reached by rough road, with virtually no tourist infrastructure and almost zero 2024–2026 coverage. We are not printing access details we cannot verify. If you are already in Sabang and have a bike, ask locally — otherwise leave this one alone.

The three the internet will lie to you about
Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.
For beaches specifically this bites hardest at Balabac. The turquoise sandbar photographs that turn up under Palawan beaches are almost always Onuk Island in the Balabac group, which is a 5 to 6 hour van to Buliluyan Port and then a 2 to 4 hour boat — 8 to 12 hours one way, and the real products are 3-day and 4-day expeditions. The same applies to El Nido as a day trip at 5 to 6 hours each way, and to Long Beach at San Vicente. All three are worth going to. None of them is worth going to and coming back the same day.

August and September, honestly
Counter-intuitively, August and September are when Puerto Princesa beats El Nido outright: the river runs year-round, Honda Bay is comparatively sheltered, and the city has the island's best wifi and its only real hospitals. In the monsoon it is the safest base in Palawan.
For beaches specifically the monsoon is a mixed bargain. The west coast — Nagtabon, Talaudyong, Napsan — faces the habagat and picks up genuine wind swell from June to October, which is fun on a board and a hazard without one. October is the wettest month at 266 mm across 21 rainy days; February is the driest at 86 mm over 10.
